Time, Talents, and Treasures: A Career Built on Purpose

Wendy Vorpahl, financial services supervisor at Cedar Community.

For Wendy Vorpahl, working at Cedar Community has never been just a job.

What began as a high school position more than 40 years ago grew into a long career shaped by service, professional growth, and meaningful relationships with residents and team members.

Today, Wendy serves as a financial services supervisor, but the reason she has stayed connected to Cedar Community for so many years remains much the same: the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life.

A Career That Started in High School

Wendy began her Cedar Community career as a certified nursing assistant while she was still in high school.

From an early age, she knew she wanted work that felt meaningful.

“I worked at various places growing up, but I was always looking for something more fulfilling.”

Over the years, Wendy advanced into several different roles at Cedar Community. While her responsibilities changed, one thing remained constant: the relationships she built with residents and team members.

“You get to know a lot about the people who live and work here, and they become part of your extended family.”

Growing a Career at Cedar Community

Working at Cedar Community gave Wendy opportunities to grow professionally over the course of her career.

Today, she serves as financial services supervisor, helping residents and families navigate topics including Medicare, Medicaid, and long-term care insurance.

Her career path reflects something that can be easy to overlook in senior living: the wide range of roles that contribute to the resident experience.

Cedar Community careers extend beyond nursing and caregiving to areas such as:

  • Financial services
  • Maintenance
  • Sales
  • Dining
  • Life enrichment
  • Administration
  • Human resources
  • Wellness
  • And many other specialties

More Than a Job

For Wendy, the relationships she has built over the years are just as meaningful as the professional opportunities.

Her children also became part of the Cedar Community experience, volunteering and enjoying activities and amenities on campus while growing up.

Wendy’s career even included time serving as the Ye Olde School teacher, helping local school groups learn what it was like to attend a one-room schoolhouse.

Several residents who volunteered alongside her during those years have remained in touch and still invite Wendy to visit.

Those lasting connections are part of what has made Cedar Community feel like more than a workplace.

Finding Meaning in Mission-Driven Work

Working for a nonprofit organization can offer something different from a traditional workplace.

At Cedar Community, team members contribute to a mission centered on serving residents, supporting families, and creating meaningful experiences.

That mission is one of the reasons Wendy has remained deeply connected to her work.

“I enjoy being able to make a difference for someone. There is a special place in my heart for our mission, and I want to see us always succeeding.”

For Wendy, the most rewarding part of her career has been knowing that her work matters to the people she serves.

More Than 40 Years of Connection

A career can change significantly over four decades.

Wendy’s certainly has.

She began as a certified nursing assistant, grew into new responsibilities, built expertise in financial services, supported residents and families, and developed relationships that have lasted well beyond individual roles.

What has remained consistent is her commitment to Cedar Community’s mission and the people who make up the community.

Her story is a reminder that meaningful work is not always defined by a job title. Sometimes, it is defined by the relationships built and the difference made along the way. Originally published in the Autumn 2024 issue of Live More magazine.
